Before I start this review I think it is worth noting that I am a hardcore SJM fan. Her books were the gateway into YA for me and that is why I hold them so dear to my heart. I also understand that many people did not enjoy this book but here is my review…

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It goes without saying really. A novella after the heart-wrenching events in ACOWAR was exactly what the fandom needed in my opinion. I think many people don’t really understand the concept of a novella and were expecting a long and complex plot.

The plot was probably my favourite part about ACOFAS. I would give anything to read another 200 pages of The Inner Circle getting drunk and exchanging Solstice gifts. It was a very light and easy storyline to follow.  Nothing eventful but full of amazing moments. I loved reading about my favourite characters again and being immersed into their (now) happy world.  I think SJM managed to depict a greater sense of Velaris in this book and really extended the city in terms of bringing in new characters and new aspects of the city. Velaris was definitely not the same thriving city as before but I liked seeing real problems being explored as opposed to being glanced over in a sentence or two. Whether it was rubble in the street or characters dealing with loss, the post-war storyline was well developed.

Now, let me turn my attention to the characters because I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say that The Inner Circle is my favourite friendship group of all time! SJM is the best at writing friendships. She puts in so many genuinely funny jokes that are not cringe worthy. In short, the friendships seem real. Whenever I read a book from the ACOTAR series it feels like I’m there with them, as though I’m sat at the dinner table drinking wine while exchanging gifts with everyone. I loved all the interaction between the characters, good and bad. The good moments were heart-warming and the bad moments were the seeds we needed to be paying attention to. I think so much of this book is full of tiny moments which SJM definitely plans to revisit or use in the upcoming books and that’s why I think this novella was so successfully written.

Finally, it’s time to discuss the sneak peek at the end of the book. I am so, incredibly excited for the upcoming book, especially because it will focus on Nesta and Cassian. Nesta is one of my favourite characters in this series. She is misunderstood by most people but I truly missed her presence in ACOFAS for most of the book. I am also a massive Nessian shipper so I can’t wait to see what the next book holds for them. As for the other points of view in the upcoming books I hope we get to see more interaction between Elain and Azriel, and, more from Lucien and Tamlin. I think this series is long overdue for a Tamlin POV… don’t get me wrong… I don’t like the guy but it would be very interesting to see things from his point of view.

So far there is not an official release date for the upcoming full length spin off novel but in my opinion I imagine it will be late 2019.

Until Next Time,

Kristina
