❥ Title: Legendary
❥ Author: Stephanie Garber
❥ Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
❥ Publisher: Flatiron Books
❥ Rating: ★★★
Not everyone gets a true ending. There are two types of endings because most people give up at the part of the story where things are the worst, where the situation feels hopeless. But that’s when hope is needed most. Only those who persevere can find their true ending.
Legendary was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018. I could not wait to get my hands on it and dig into the story. Once I began reading I felt like I was in a world far away from Caraval...
We are given the POV of Tella in the sequel to Caraval and this threw me off a little bit. I should have expected it considering the ending of Caraval. As I began reading I felt like the female characters (Tella and Scarlett) were really portrayed as damsels in distress. It seemed like the male characters dictated their lives and controlled what happened to them during the second Caraval. I really expected Tella to be more of a forward character and would lead the story in a different direction but I was left with the impression that she, and Scarlett, will always remain pawns in the game of Caraval. I really hope this changes in the last instalment of the series.
In terms of plot, I think Legendary did present a whole new aspect of Caraval and Valenda. It dug deeper into the fictional world and we saw more through the introduction of the Fates and somewhat behind the scenes of Caraval. It definitely felt like something was missing though. It felt like a huge jump from Caraval to Legendary. Almost as if Legendary could have been the first novel in the series if it had some extra background information about the first Caraval and Tella’s correspondence with Jacks.
I have to admit that I was not happy with the reveal of Legend’s identity. I saw it coming from a mile away! I think the execution of the reveal was not done well. Stephanie Garber really gave it away in the scene which Tella eavesdrops in on a certain conversation. (That was the best I could do without giving a spoiler) It was disappointing because the whole book was a build up to the reveal of Legend’s identity when it had already been revealed earlier in the novel.
Stephanie Garber definitely has the talent of writing strong endings! I absolutely stand by that opinion. The ending to Caraval blew me away and I certainly wasn’t expecting the ending to Legendary. I am not ready to give up on this series because I truly do love the magical aspects and Garber’s writing style. I just hope that the last instalment of the series will give me the excitement I was hoping to find in Legendary.
Until Next Time,
